Established on January 13, 1825, Adams County is named after the 6th U.S. President, John Quincy Adams. Adams County, Illinois, was formed in 1825 from the western part of Pike County. It was established along an old military trail that was originally used for military purposes during the early 19th century. This trail was part of a broader network of routes used by settlers, traders, and military personnel as they moved westward, helping to shape the early development of the region. The county’s creation was part of the state’s efforts to organize and expand as new territories were settled.
